Detailed explanation of Dual output DC stabilized power supply and precautions

1、Basic functions of DC stabilized power supply

Dual output or multi output DC stabilized power supply: for example, providing a fixed output of 5V, 2A; Provide two adjustable outputs (A and B) ranging from 0 to 24V and 0 to 1A. Adjustable outputs generally have two working modes: voltage stabilization and current stabilization. These two working modes automatically switch with load changes and are displayed as CV and CC modes by the LED on the front panel of the instrument. Generally, green light indicates CV (voltage stabilization) and red light indicates CC (current stabilization).

Some regulated power supplies also provide both series operation of A and B channels and master-slave tracking operation modes. If A is the main circuit and B is the slave circuit, when tracking the working mode, the output voltage of the slave circuit varies with the main circuit, which is more suitable for situations where a symmetrical bipolar power supply is required. If A and B are connected in series, they can output 0-48V and 0-1A DC power supply; When working in series tracking mode, it can output 0~± 24V, 0~1A DC power supply.

2、Precautions for use

1. Adjust the "coarse adjustment" knob first according to the required voltage, and then gradually adjust the "fine adjustment" knob to achieve correct coordination. For example, when outputting 12V voltage, the "coarse adjustment" knob should be set to 15V, and then the "fine adjustment" knob should be adjusted to 12V, while the "coarse adjustment" knob should not be set to 10V. Otherwise, the maximum output voltage cannot reach 12V.

2. Adjust to the required voltage before connecting the load.

3. During use, if it is necessary to change the "coarse adjustment" mode, the load should be disconnected first, and the output voltage should be adjusted to the required value before connecting the load.

4. During use, if the protection is caused by a short circuit or overload of the load, the load should be disconnected first, and then the "restore" button should be pressed. The power can also be restarted, and the voltage can be restored to normal operation. After troubleshooting, the load can be connected again.

5. When connecting power sources with different rated currents in series, the output current should be the rated value of the one with the lowest rated value.

6. Each power supply has a header that indicates the output current or output voltage of the circuit in different A/V states. Usually placed in voltage indication state.

7. Each circuit has two output terminals, red and black. The red terminal represents "+" and the black terminal represents "-". The black terminal with the symbol "earth" in the middle of the panel indicates that it is connected to the chassis and has no electrical connection with each output. It is only used as a safety wire. People often assume that the "earth" symbol represents ground, and "+" and "-" represent the positive and negative power outputs used to power the dual power operational amplifier.

8. Two voltages can be used in series. Parallel use is absolutely not allowed. Power supply is a type of measuring instrument, so it is not allowed to short-circuit the output terminal for a long time.

3、Q&A on Current/Voltage Regulation

Phenomenon 1: Output with voltage but no current, or with current but no voltage

Regardless of the above situation, the power supply is working normally, and the operator should check whether their load is in good contact, whether the load is short circuited or open circuited, whether the load meets the specifications, and so on. In extreme cases, if the power supply has voltage output (constant voltage state) and the load line is disconnected, the natural output current will be equal to zero. Similarly, if the power supply has a constant current output and the load is short circuited, the natural output voltage will be equal to zero.

Phenomenon 2: When adjusting the voltage, it was found that the no-load voltage could not be adjusted up.

Some operators like to turn the "current adjustment" potentiometer to the left until the no-load voltage of the power supply cannot be adjusted. This indicates that he lacks a substantial understanding of "current regulation". Because even when the power supply is unloaded, it still consumes a small amount of current, and if you turn off the "current regulation" to zero, you won't even release a small amount of current, and of course, the unloaded voltage won't rise. So generally, do not adjust the "current regulation" to zero (adjust it to about a quarter turn to the right to avoid the above situation).

General solution: When using a voltage regulator to output voltage, the current adjustment knob should be turned clockwise to the end and held. Adjust the voltage adjustment knob to control the output DC voltage value. When using a stable current source to output current, the voltage adjustment knob should be turned clockwise to the bottom and held. Adjust the current regulation knob to control the output DC current value.

Phenomenon 3: The power supply has both voltage and current outputs, but if the voltage is further adjusted, the voltage cannot be raised. Or the current cannot be adjusted.

This is because the operator is not very clear about the concepts of "constant voltage" and "constant current". If the "constant voltage" light is on, it indicates that the power supply is working in a constant voltage state (voltage can be considered as the active state). At this time, the output current is determined by the load, not adjusted by the operator (current can be considered as the passive state). If you turn the "current adjustment" knob to the right at this time, the current will not increase. But at this point, turning the "voltage adjustment" knob to the right will increase the output voltage, and the output current will also increase accordingly. Voltage is primary, current is secondary.

Similarly, if the "constant current" light is on, it indicates that the power supply is operating in a constant current state, and the output voltage at this time is not "adjusted", but determined by the load. Only by adjusting the "current adjustment" knob will the output current change and the output voltage also change accordingly. (Here, the current is primary and the voltage is secondary)

In short, it is important to clarify the master-slave relationship. Adjusting the current when the power supply is in a "constant current" state and adjusting the voltage when it is in a "constant voltage" state is necessary to change the voltage and current on the load.
